Chapter I

From the beginning he was different.

His first conscious sensation was of a warm, pleasant wetness and of something stroking his body. He liked it. From his throat issued a tiny mew, which was answered by a rumbling he would come to know extremely well. His ears also registered a licking sound and a deep wheezing. The licking he associated with the pleasant stroking. The wheezing was like his own breathing, only louder. There had to be another creature there with him, a creature that liked making him feel good. He reciprocated by poking his tiny tongue from his mouth and trying to lick whatever was licking him.

He instinctively squinted to see better, but it didn’t help. The world around him was vague and dark.

The sense he relied on most was his sense of smell. He did not know a lot about himself yet, but he did know it was keener by far than any of the others.

His nose registered so many scents, he had trouble sorting them out. There was the scent of the sticky saliva on his small form, the dank scent of his home, and a rancid scent that came from beyond his range of vision. There was a sickly-sweet odor that underlay the rest. But the scent he liked the most was the pungent scent of the creature licking him. Somehow he knew that this creature was there to care for him. To protect him. In the dim recesses of his brain he recognized that it somehow was responsible for his being there. And a new sensation came over him, a feeling of deep affection and contentment.

Time passed. His knowledge expanded. He discovered that the creature he came to think of as Caregiver was gigantic compared to him. When nestled in her fur, he would glance up at her face and marvel at how high above him it was. Sometimes, when playing with his den mates, he would scamper completely around her, and it always seemed to take an eternity.

That was the other major discovery he made. He was not the only small one there. Two others shared his world, like him in every respect except they were both bigger than he was. A lot bigger. Which was why he came to think of himself as Runt.

One was a brother who loved to pounce on him and swat him about and nip at his neck with sharp teeth that hurt terribly. In his mind his brother became Mean, and would always be Mean.

The other den mate was a she, like the Caregiver. She treated him much more nicely, and would often snuggle against him when they slept. He liked playing with her, because she was never rough and never bit too hard. He always thought of her as Nice.

They played, they fed, they slept. Life was good, except for the bullying of Mean, and Runt would have been content to stay there forever. He was conscious of growing, and of hair sprouting over his body. His vision improved, but neither his eyes nor his ears could compete with the excellence of his nose.
